Preparing the ground for increased shares of renewable energy and power trading in Peru and the SINEA region
In tune with national and international climate goals, Peru is striving to realise a more efficient and clean energy mix. The National Energy Plan foresees a 20% share of wind and solar power by 2030, to complement the significant hydropower share that is already in place. The country benefits from the availability of diversified primary energy resources and has a great potential of renewable energy resources.
Yet the variable nature of these resources requires new approaches to planning and operating the power system. GET.transform has been among the country’s trusted partners in paving the way to a successful energy sector transformation since 2021. Working with the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), the power system coordinator COES (Comité de Operación Económica del Sistema Interconectado Nacional), the regulator Osinergmin but also regional bodies like CIER or OLACDE, GET.transform helps strengthen institutional capacities, technical frameworks and cross-border markets.
Aiming for increased resilience, stability and trading opportunity, Peru’s power system targets to go beyond the national level and include regional energy integration. The focus of GET.transform’s work has equally expanded to support the efficient integration of the neighbouring electricity markets that, together, make up the SINEA (Andean Electrical Interconnection System) region: Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador.
The new focus further enhances the synergetic cooperation with GET.transform’s sister programme, GET.invest, which works with private sector partners in mobilising clean energy investments.
Together with Peru’s sector stakeholders but also partners promoting the EU-LAC Global Gateway Investment Agenda, GET.transform and GET.invest will help to unlock opportunities that allow Peru and the SINEA region to advance toward a reliable, sustainable and interconnected power system.
