The Danish Energy Agency (DEA), under the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) programme, with organisational support from GET.transform, held a workshop in Windhoek to strengthen collaboration on wind resource assessment and wind atlas development in Namibia. The event, led by experts from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), provided a platform to share international experience on wind measurement, resource assessment, and wind atlas methodologies, including tools such as the Global Wind Atlas and the Wind Atlas for South Africa (WASA).

The workshop was warmly welcomed by the Namibia’s Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME) and marked the kick-off of the engagement between Danish and Namibian experts, setting the stage for ongoing refinement and knowledge exchange on wind resource assessment and wind atlas development.

The engagement reflects national priorities outlined in the APRA Action Plan for Namibia, developed through a consultation process led by MIME. Its goal is to build capacity in wind resource assessment and atlas concepts, while also strengthening understanding of system integration.

Denmark contributes extensive expertise in this field, through resource assessment, modelling, project development, and large-scale deployment. Namibia’s effort also draws inspiration from the successful WASA initiative, where DTU acted as technical coordinator and implementation partner alongside South Africa’s Department of Energy. Supported by Danish funding, WASA has become a key reference point for Namibia’s own wind atlas journey.

This work builds on APRA’s achievements in other partner countries, such as Kenya. There, GET.transform has supported APRA under the Policy Catalyst Window on Effective Renewable Tendering in the last Power Procurement Workshop that has strengthened institutional and technical capacity for renewable energy auctions.

With this launch, DEA, APRA and GET.transform look forward to deepening collaboration with Namibian institutions and partners, ensuring that knowledge exchange and technical expertise help establish a strong foundation for the country’s wind energy development.
