The fist Africa Electricity Symposium, held from 25 to 27 June 2025 in Kampala, marked a significant milestone in Africa’s energy journey. Organised by Uganda’s Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) in partnership with GET.transform and other collaborators, the symposium brought together 500 representatives from the energy sector, including policymakers, financiers, researchers, and technology innovators.
Themed “Powering Africa’s Future: Smart Grids, Modern Energy Systems, and Productive Use for Sustainable Development”, the event focused on critical areas such as decentralised energy solutions, carbon financing, and regional power market integration. Participants explored strategies to drive sustainable growth through innovations in electricity infrastructure, digitalisation, and renewable energy.
Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, emphasised the importance of legal frameworks in achieving a just energy transition, citing ongoing high-voltage interconnection projects with the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) as key to regional energy security. ERA CEO Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako called for the implementation of cost-reflective tariffs while ensuring broader energy access.
A key outcome of the Symposium was the strengthened collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers, aiming to fast-track Africa’s energy transition. The event underlined the urgency of mobilising investments, fostering innovation, and enhancing governance to build a resilient and inclusive energy future for Africa.
