Last week, the 1st Regional Energy Transition Conference in Chile brought together key regional and international stakeholders to discuss the path towards a cleaner, more integrated energy future in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The two-day event was organised by the Regional Energy Integration Commission (CIER), GET.transform and in partnership with Chile’s Ministry of Energy, the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuel (SEC), and the National Energy Commission (CNE).
In her opening remarks, Mrs Mercedes Rodríguez, Head of the European Union Delegation in Chile, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting the LAC energy transition through Global Gateway. The EU provides EUR 20 million in technical assistance via Euroclima and EUR 2 billion in investment projects, in collaboration with CAF, IADB, and other regional banks. Drawing on Europe’s successful experience with energy integration through initiatives like the Green Deal and Fit for 55, Mrs Rodríguez emphasised that while the LAC region has rich natural resources and several promising integration efforts, it remains the least commercially integrated region globally. Existing energy connections remain mostly bilateral and lack coordinated regulation and investment frameworks that could help unlock a cleaner and more just regional energy transition.
Daniel Cumpa Exebio, Country Coordinator for GET.transform in Peru, added insights to a panel on public policy, energy planning, and regulation alongside representatives from Chile’s Ministry of Energy, the National Energy Commission, ECLAC, and ENGIE. The panel examined how energy planning and regulatory frameworks foster innovation, public participation, and greater resilience in energy systems. GET.transform contributed best practices and case studies from its work across the region.
In addition, GET.transform and CIER presented Achievement Awards for Energy Integration to the members of the SINEA initiative (Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Chile).
During the closing session, Antonio Levy, Senior Advisor at GET.transform, reaffirmed the programme’s ongoing support for developing energy transition frameworks in both Africa and the LAC region and strong partnership with regional organisations in translating ideas into concrete action.
