In July, the 14th edition of Expo Energía Peru, brought together leaders from both the public and private sectors including companies, specialists and authorities, to discuss pressing issues on Peru’s energy agenda under the theme “Challenges and perspectives of a sustainable energy transition: towards a roadmap for the Peruvian electricity sector.”
GET.transform’s Country Coordinator, Daniel Cumpa Exebio, presented on the panel “Status of Energy Integration in Latin America: Development and Future Scenarios” moderated by Francisco Porles Ochoa, director of Mad Energy. Other panelists included Jose Medardo Cadena Mosquera, advisor to the Executive Secretary of Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) and Marco Mancilla, former Executive Secretary of National Energy Commission of Chile.
The panel demonstrated that regional energy integration is essential to enhance energy security and maximise the complementarity of energy resources. Combining different energy sources is a powerful tool to optimise existing infrastructure and power generation. Renewable energy scaling can further increase the integration of solar and wind energy without compromising system security and reliability. However, establishing the necessary institutional and regulatory coordination to improve interconnection remains a challenge.
GET.transform’s support to United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) for the Regional Forum of Energy Planners (FOREPLEN) and its work on energy integration also provided important lessons about knowledge management. Private investment was emphasised as a mechanism to meet sector objectives by implementing clear regulatory frameworks and incentives.
By unlocking its high potential for energy integration through regional cooperation and regulatory harmonisation, Latin America and the Caribbean can boost energy security, advance sustainable development, and move the energy transition forward.
