Earlier this month, the African Union Commission (AUC) successfully convened the first High-Level Technical Meeting on the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event marked a milestone with the official launch of the AfSEM High-Level Technical Oversight Committee, reaffirming Africa’s commitment to a unified, competitive, and sustainable continental electricity market.
Held under the theme “Advancing AfSEM and CMP Implementation: Strengthening Regional Power Markets for a Unified and Sustainable African Electricity Future”, the meeting brought together representatives from African regional power pools, member states, regional economic communities (RECs), development banks, and technical partners. The focus was on catalysing collaboration towards operationalising AfSEM and CMP through policy harmonisation, investment mobilisation, and renewable energy promotion, all aligned with the AU’s Agenda 2063 and energy transition goals.
GET.transform played a leading role in contributing to the technical discussions. Ene Macharm, Head of Partnerships at GET.transform, delivered impactful insights. She presented the Renewable Supply Chain and Manufacturing Study, which highlights the untapped potential for Africa–Europe collaboration in renewable energy development. She also showcased the Policy Catalyst programme which successfully built capacity in effective renewable energy tendering with 11 African countries. The enhanced IPP procurement skills are of vital relevance for the AfSEM implementation.
On the second day of the event, GET.transform deepened its contributions by highlighting its ongoing support to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). This includes support for updating SAPP’s regional Generation and Transmission Master Plan which is an important roadmap guiding electricity planning and investment across Southern Africa. The plan is designed to boost investor confidence and promote greater integration across Africa’s regional power markets. In addition, GET.transform is supporting SAPP in the establishment of new energy-related markets on renewable energy, carbon trading, financial instruments, and ancillary services which are critical components for enabling a dynamic and integrated continental power system.
Key outcomes from the meeting included a validated strategic roadmap and technical guidelines for AfSEM implementation, an institutional coordination framework, and actionable policy recommendations to be presented at the AU Specialized Technical Committee meeting in October 2025.
GET.transform’s contributions continues to underscore the impact of targeted technical assistance in advancing a resilient, interconnected, and sustainable African electricity market.
