Mozambique has developed a roadmap to successfully leverage its distributed generation (DG) potential. The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), the regulator ARENE, and the public utility EDM have collaborated with GET.transform to outline the strategy in a Distributed Generation White Paper.

Mozambique’s electricity sector is undergoing a significant transformation to capitalise on global trends such as the decarbonisation, decentralisation, and digitalisation of power systems, along with the increasing emphasis on renewable energy sources.

Despite a growing share of variable renewable energy generation, however, the uptake of distributed generation has remained limited. Building on Mozambique’s most recent updates to its electricity regulation, the Distributed Generation White Paper offers the pathway to a clear legal framework to enable distributed generation.

In forging the strategy, the public sector partners secured private sector perspectives through Mozambique’s National DG Working Group which also includes the two renewable energy associations ALER and AMER.

The resulting paper highlights barriers and opportunities for scaling distributed renewable energy generation as well as key actions required for successful implementation.
